Homemade Taco Seasoning

Here’s a simple homemade taco seasoning that tastes great and uses common pantry spices. We have always used the McCormick Taco seasoning but we did not have any so… Try for yourself, I think you will agree, this mix is better.

Makes about 3 tablespoons (enough for 1 pound of ground meat)

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (regular or smoked)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon fine salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne (optional, for heat)

Directions

  1. Mix all the spices together in a small bowl or jar.
  2. Store in an airtight container for up to 6 months in a cool, dry place.

Making the Taco’s

  • Brown 1 pound of ground beef, turkey, or chicken and drain excess fat if needed.
  • Stir in the entire batch of seasoning and ½ to ⅔ cup water.
  • Simmer for 3–5 minutes, until the sauce thickens and coats the meat.

Options

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch for a thicker, saucier filling.
  • ½ teaspoon sugar to balance acidity if serving with tomatoes or salsa.
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika for a deeper, smoky flavor.
  • A squeeze of fresh lime juice after cooking for brightness.

Notes

This blend is also great on roasted vegetables, black beans, grilled chicken, or sprinkled over potatoes before roasting.
